MAN HAUL: WELLA AND LEWIN & REILLY

It's not everyday that I get a man haul at my door, I share my beauty products with my mum and occasionally with my boyfriend. My father is forever envious of the beauty packages I receive (he said he wants some packages too). So here's one for the boys. Since my partner shaves his head and doesn't have a lot of hair to style, I gave him the cleanser to trial and review. While dad, with a head full of hair took care of the Wella products.

Even though dad is in his late 50s he still like to style and take care of himself. Dad use to have luscious hair, after he agreed to be a guinea pig to trial some of his friend's "home-made" shampoo it hasn't been the same. For special occasions, dad likes to use gel or hairspray. We recently had a dinner event so it was the perfect opportunity to put the Wella products to the test.

Wella Just Brilliant Shine Pomade provided incredible shine, it's like a gloss for hair! Definitely something I'd imagine Danny Zuko (John Travolta in Grease) would use to make his hair nice and glossy. It coats nicely over your natural hair with minimal hold as the shine pomade has a hold level of 1 out of 4. The texture is a little bit waxy and quite thick but easy to apply. The scent of this product is quite strong, very sweet and musky. Dad said he liked the shine but wasn't a big fan of the scent.

If you are looking for a product to create some gentle styling, try Wella Grip Cream. This was Dad's favourite. As a middle aged man, he preferred a "light wave" (those were his words) rather than spiked hair. The texture of the Grip Cream is very creamy (Dad had never used a grip cream before) he was pleasantly surprised that the cream was of such a pleasant consistency, it was also easy to spread, manipulate and apply. Once applied the Grip Cream gave a lovely fruity aroma. The hold level is 3 out of 4 and it will last all day!

Wella Sculpt Force is something else, this is your go to product for spiked hair or if you want to turn your hair into a work of art. The gel consistency is all too familiar however, it is not slimy or tacky like some of the hair products dad had many years ago. Sculpt Force posses a hold level of 4 out of 4! Sculpt Force comes in a squeezable bottle and has a subtle floral scent. This product is heavy duty.. and the result? well... scroll down and see for yourself.

Lewin & Reilly Organic Sandalwood and Virgin Coconut Cleansing Cream was given to my boyfriend. He cleanses... on occasion but he is now in love with this cleanser. It is the perfect product for men with dry skin and his skin is dry as hell. The sandalwood scent is visible however not over-powering. My boy Sam said that his skin felt soft and moisturised after using this cleansing cream. He was initially concerned that he might break out due to the heavy consistency of the cleansing cream, but there were no breakouts in sight!

Dad's natural hair - no products used

Dad's hair after styling. Grip Cream to the left portion and Sculpt Force to the right portion of hair.

Now, I know it's difficult to determine the effect of Wella Sculpt Force from the above picture (it also simply does not do justice).. and dad did not want his hair to be spiked. So I took the liberty to show you guys what this extra strong flubber gel is capable of!!!

It's not a flattering look so feel free to laugh, I was honestly just bored and curious, but holy moly. How amazing is the hold! I wanted to see if it would work for those with long hair and whether it would wilt in an hour.. oh no it didn't! My hair stayed like this for  about 5 hours until I decided to washed it off. Very very impressive.

High SPF Lip Balms: Sunsense and ViraproX

Looking through my lip balm stash, most of my balms range from SPF 5 to SPF 15, the sun is harsh so why is it that the rest of my face is covered with SPF 30 to 50+ while my lips suffer. Sunburn is probably not as noticable on our lips but if it's been exposed to the sun long enough it'll come through. Lip cancer is not uncommon and often overlooked. Our lower lip is 12 times more likely to be affected due to it's position to sun exposure.

Let me introduce two high SPF and high performing lip balms.

SunSense Lip Balm SPF 50+

This balm has been a miracle worker. I've seen high SPF lip balms in Japan, but not in Australia. This balm has not parted from my carry bag since it's been introduced to me. It hydrates my lips and saved me from UV exposure during my trip to Port Douglas. As per product directions, I would apply this balm 20 minutes prior to sun exposure and re-apply every couple of hours.

Product benefits:
  • Protection from UVA and UVB rays
  • Nourishing
  • SPF 50+
  • Easy glide on applicator
  • Free from fragrance and lanolin
  • 4 hours water resistant
  • Dermalogically tested
Price: $4.99 from Chemist Warehouse

My Verdict
  • I swear by this balm, it nice and creamy, highly moisturising from start to finish.
  • The texture is relatively thick so you might need to give the tube a bit of a squeeze, however, it is very easy to apply and spread. To be honest, I did find this balm a little bit greasy compared to my old Blistex balm when I first used it, but there's a reason for it. Blistex  hydrated to begin with and dried up significantly after an hour. Sunsense's lip balm kept my lips hydrated for hours.
  • This lip balm is water-resistant, not waterproof so don't go submerging your face under water for a long period of time. I went on a sail boat wearing this and did get splashes of sea-water on my face but the balm stayed put. It's also wind proof - some balms dry up and crack my lips after some heavy gushes of wind, this didn't.
  • If you are looking for a good high SPF product, Sunsense SPF 50+ Lip Blam is it. At $4.99 a pop, it is a bargain so get one for each bag.
(Related: Sunsense Sunscreen Guide)

ViraproX Trip Action Lip Balm SPF 30+

Product Benefits
  • Highly moisturising
  • Contains Lysine (an amino acid found in foods such as yoghurt and cheese, often used to prevent cold sores)
  • Menthol to help relieve the discomfort of cold sores if they occur
  • SPF 30 to help protect against cold sores

Price: $6.99 for 15ml at Chemist Warehouse

My Verdict
  • I get cold sores once in a while out of the blue and they are extremely annoying. I usually use a patch and have never tried a preventative lip balm before.
  • The texture of the balm is creamy, easy to apply and spread.
  • The Menthol is noticable and gives a nice, subtle cooling effect. The first time I used it I thought it smelt a little bit medicinal but soon realised it's just menthol - I haven't used any balms with Menthol for a long time!
  • Like Sunsense Lip Balm, this product is super hydrating that will keep your lips moist and supple for hours.
  • I feel that it is difficult determining the effectiveness of this product since it's a preventative balm, but having said that I did use it on a daily basis when I did have a cold sore and it did help calm the cold sore down.
  • ViraproX Lip Balm is highly recommended for those who are cold-sore prone, yet still looking for a high SPF and high performing lip balm.

5 GREAT EBAY BEAUTY BUYS

Ebay is a wonderful place to find cheaper alternatives, although I do have one rule where I never ever purchase cosmetics or skincare from Ebay. When it comes to brand names, there's every chance of it being a replica or stocks from many years ago. And as for cheap/unbranded makeup.. well, I don't know what's in the tube, whether it's safe and I'm not willing to become a human guinea pig.

So my Ebay hunt has been for tools.

Oval Brush Cleaning Glove

I did not want to fork out $40 to purchase a brush cleaning glove from Sigma, so here's a $1 alternative from Ebay. It's about 7cm in length and 5.2cms wide made from silicone. You can put two fingers in the egg to hold the brush, but that feels a bit yonic, so I like to hold it between my thumb and index finger (see picture below). This is a great cleaning pad for travelers.

The smaller knobs on top is made for foaming and lathering. I've been bashing my brushes against the sink and my fingers, this product is an absolute life saver. And yes, my powder brush fits on the cleaning pad as well.

If you are looking for a bigger pad under $15 click here.

I paid $1 for this item, postage inclusive. Click here to purchase or search "egg brush cleaner"

Brush Cleaning Pad

I caved and purchased this brush cleaning pad because I wanted something hands-free. The little oval egg cleaner is great for traveling, but not so great when I have 20 brushes that needs to be cleaned and no sink space to place my clean brushes.

The pad sticks onto tubs and sinks, you just need to make sure you don't stick it on a wet patch to prevent it from slipping and moving around. Some of the listing shows people cleaning their brushes in a small shallow tub with the pad stuck close to the rim of the tub, it is probably ideal for this item.

I stuck the pad inside the sink and eventually the base got wet and started slipping, so make sure you stick the pad towards the top edge of your sink. I have to warn you that this does wobble a bit, so if you feel like this is not for you, I'd highly recommend the larger cleaning pad (sigma inmitation) - unfortunately this product will not go well with the design of my sink drain.

I paid $1.89 for this on Ebay including postage, click here to purchase or search for "brush cleaning pad"

Oval Makeup Brush

I have seen a similar brush with a brand logo sold for up to $42, here's your $1.79 alternative.

If you ever wanted to give an oval brush a go, head over to Ebay, it is essentially the same product minus the brand commissions. This brush is of high quality, the brush itself is dense and super soft. I will write a separate post comparing this brush to my beloved flat top brush.

I paid $1.79 for this brush, postage inclusive. Click here to purchase or search for "toothbrush makeup brush"

Bamboo Brush Set - 11 pieces

This bamboo brush set was irresistable. The bristles are soft, dense and it doesn't really shed after wash. A part from the angled eyeliner brush that needs a bit of trimming because it was a bit curved - everything else was fine. I've had this set for a couple of years now and I absolutely love it, it's as good as my expensive brushes.
I paid $8.08 including postagefor this set on Ebay. Click here to purchase or search for "Bamboo brush set 11 pieces"

Brush Holder

I have written about brush cleaning and this particular brush holder here. So I won't go into too much detail. All I wana say is that it is super duper handy!

I purchased this for under $5 including postage, I noticed a slight inflation on Ebay for this product.

There are better quality brush holders now on ebay for about $10 just search for "acrylic brush holder dryer".

Have you come across any good Ebay buys?

Natural Lash Look with Ardell Double Individual Lashes

False lashes is something I dread and love at the same time. I want longer and fuller looking lashes but I hate the feeling of falsies on my lids, the edges popping out of place after a period of time, the number of lashes been pulled out when removing the falsies, the fact that it doesn't look natural and just the overall application process is a killer. Due to this, I have worn falsies 2-3 times in my life. I wore it for new years eve in 2014 and vowed never to wear it again, I don't have that many lashes on my eyes so I try hard to preserve them!! It's been over a year since I used falsies and this time it's different.

If you wear a full set of falsies on a daily basis..I salute you, but if you are a non-falsie wearer like myself due to the above reasons, you might find this useful.

Instead of using a full strip of falsies, stick individual lashes to the outer edge of your lids. All I did was curl my lashes (mascara is optional), used a tweezer to dip my Ardell Individual Lashes* into the lash glue (I'm using Ardell Clear Adhesive) and on they went!

The Benefits of this look:
  • Super easy to apply, you do not require a great deal of accuracy, perfect for beginners
  • Time efficient, it takes me 10 minutes to apply a full set of false lashes, this took me a minute
  • It's comfortable you won't even feel it
  • It's natural looking and I am all about the natural look
  • You can wear this look all the time, not just on special occasions
  • It's easy to remove, I just wet my finger and gently remove the lashes one at a time minimising eye lash casualties
  • It's recycable, I soak the lashes in a small bowl of water for a few minutes and gently remove the glue with my fingers
  • I can still rub the inner half of my eyes
  • It's fully customisable
  • Compliments your natural lashes, creates a fuller lash look
  • Even if one individual lash falls off the look is not ruined!!!

It honestly doesnt get any more natural looking than this...

With Mascara

Without mascara

Below is a close up, left eye is my natural lashes curled with mascara, right is my natural lashes curled with mascara AND 3 x ardell individual lashes

What do you think guys? Would you try this or do your prefer a full lash strip?

La Roche-Posay Serozinc Review

The past couple of weeks have been crazy, busy at work and busy at home. I recently decided to bring a new member into our family, a 7 week old love bird named Tolly (gender unknown). Little fella is extremely active, enjoys climbing and playing with toys .. and it's been such a tough gig to get it to eat!! The pet store person old us we have to hand feed it for another month, so everyone has been taking shifts feeding baby Tolly.

Since I'm not well rested and have lots on my mind, my skin had gone a bit funny with blemishes, dry spots and redness. Now, I've actually stopped using a toner because I'm lazy and toning takes time using a cotton pad. Serozinc landed at my door not long ago and timing couldn't have been more perfect.

ABOUT SEROZINC
  • Serozinc is an international cult product that launched in Australia this month. It's a mist that will purify, sooth and matify. A product designed to target oily, acne prone and irritated skin.
  • Pores are visibly tightened and complexion smoothened, it makes the perfect makeup base.
  • Serozinc contains three ingredients only: Zinc Sulphate (reduce excess oil and matifies skin), Sodium Chloride (natural salt to cleanse and purify skin) and Spring Water (sooth and cleanse).
  • Designed for daily use, highly recommended for oily, acne prone skin or those who would like to prolong the wear of their makeup.
  • This product is preservative free , fragrance free and hypoallergenic

How to use?
1. Cleanse with your usual cleanser
2. Close your eyes and spray Serozinc all over your face
3. Apply moisturiser
Price: $19.99 - $23.95 (from Priceline and Chemist Warehouse)

MY VERDICT

  • I've been using this product after every cleanse for the past couple of weeks and I can't put it down. My face felt instantly hydrated and recharged after a spray of Serozinc.
  • My skin is problematic on an intermittent basis, mainly redness, breakouts, pores and recently a very oily T-Zone. I do feel like my skin had tightened to some degree following the spray, I'm yet to see my pores actually reduce in size, but that will take a long time given my grand-canyon equivalent pores.
  • My skin had calmed down significantly after using Serozinc for the past couple of weeks, I saw reductions in redness, bumps and what not during "that time of the month" I have been a little bit naughty and haven't moisturised as well since using this product, even though it's a product designed for oily and acne prone skin, it hydrates incredible well. Kudos!
  • The mist is very quickly absorbed and there's no particular scent to the product, it's a light mist that can be sprayed evenly across your face with it's aerosol design.  Maybe I'm just really weak with no upper limb strength, I find the spray button a tiny bit difficult to press (compared to my deodorant), I need to hold the bottle with one hand and use the other hand to press down on the button to dispense the mist.
  • I've always wondered why this 3 ingredient product is a cult favourite, now I know. I've used a few products from La Roche Posay and it's quickly climbing to the top of my skincare ladder!

LET'S CHAT #2: THINGS I LEARNED FROM RELATIONSHIPS

Hand Models: Mum and Dad :)

THE HONEYMOON PERIOD

The honeymoon period is great, butterflies overload. When I was young, this imaginative period sent me on a whirlwind, I thought "YES I WILL MARRY THIS PERSON", and I've only known them for a couple of weeks. I didn't think about any practical elements, i.e., at that time I was way too young for marriage, I didn't have a stable job, I didn't know their true nature and I was still trying to figure myself out... I also had the rest of my life to live.

Reflecting back, I really let my emotions lead me by the nose. I think there needs to be a good balance of emotional and logical reasoning.

THE DIFFICULT TIMES

I've encountered differences and issues that were unable to be resolved with my partners, if neither of us is willing to apologise or if one person is carrying every blame on their shoulders. It's not gonna work.

I have learned that I really need to reflect on what happened, and evaluate on the things I did wrong rather than disregarding my errors and passing on the blame. It's always hard to admit you are wrong, but you gotta be collaborative in a relationship.

THE OBLIGATION

If you ever feel that you are obligated to be with someone, that you are too lazy or cannot be bothered to find someone else, even though you are not happy in your relationship. You better talk to your partner about it and work something out, it's not fair to string your hopeful partner to a dead end. This is coming from a relationship only perspective. I've never been married and don't have any children.

THE BREAK-UP
Breakups are emotionally draining. You need to cry and talk to your friends, but don't bombard them with your emotions, they can only take so much. Spread it around and speak to your family as well.

During a bad breakup, my tip is to cut all contacts with your ex and either put away or throw out their belonging/gifts if you are not coping. Let out your steam and bawl your eyes out with a hot shower. Personally, friends and music helped me through my breakups. My favourite song to listen to Your Ex Lover is Dead by Stars. Great song, powerful lyrics.

MY PARTNER IS NOT A MIND READER
This is probably the most important lesson I have learned, if you are not happy about something or if your partner did or is doing something you are uncomfortable with then you need to talk to them.

Giving them the silent treatment or just being mad at them won't actually resolve too much, half the time your partner will just think you are moody. They might buy you a gift or take you out to make you happy, but they probably won't have a clue why you were annoyed in the first place and continue doing whatever it is that made you angry in the first lace.  Don't ever think "THEY SHOULD KNOW WHAT THEY'VE DONE WRONG".

I think meeting random guys off the internet is dangerous, I fear that he may secretly be some flesh eating alienesque parasite, but you might think differently.

Open communication is the key.

TELL ME WHAT YOU HAVE LEARNED FROM YOUR RELATIONSHIPS

Sunsense Anti Ageing Face Matte SPF 50+ Sunscreen Review

Being a fairly dry skinned gal, I can withstand the oily nature of most sunscreen, my mother on the other hand would not wear a drop of sunscreen on her face (unless we are going to the beach or fishing) because she hates the greasy feeling and the oily look. We've tried a range of different facial sunscreen, they may look matte on my face, but it's a different story on hers.

One afternoon I found my Mum digging through my Elucent Whitening range fishing for more anti-pigmentation correctors while in guilt admitted that she hasn't been using the previous facial sunscreen I gave her. I said to mum "No wonder you have so many sunspots!!!" and handed her a little bottle of miracle.

A fortnight later, she walked over to me holding the little bottle of SunSense Anti Ageing Face Matte and gave me a cheeky grin before asking whether it comes in a bigger bottle.

ABOUT SUNSENSE ANTI AGEING FACE MATTE SPF 50+

  • Moisturising base
  • Can be used under make-up

  • SPF 50+ reduces the sunburning UV light from reaching your skin by approximately 50% when compared to an SPF 30+ if used correctly*.
  • Contains Nicotinamide – helping to maintain the normal skin barrier function and improving the appearance of skin tone and texture.
  • Contains Vitamin E, an antioxidant that can be beneficial in helping to protect from UV skin damage such as wrinkling and age spots
Ingredients:
Bemotrizinol 2.5%, octyl methoxycinnamate 7.0%, diethylamino hydroxybenzoyl hexyl benzoate 3.0%, Diazolidinylurea.

Price: $14.69 for 100ml from Chemist Warehouse

OUR VERDICT
  • Mum is in love with this sunscreen, it is the only thing she will use. She has oily skin, and with most sunscreen, it would grease up her face significantly. Sunsense Anti Ageing Face Matte Sunscreen is non-greasy, there is a slight shine that is quickly absorbed. Mum said she now feels a lot more confident and comfortable wearing sunscreen and has incorporated this product into her daily routine.
  • I've been using Sunsense Daily Face Invisible Tint Finish for some time, a few people have found this to be a little bit oily, but my skin is dry so the shine that most people experience doesn't really bother me. After trying Sunsense Anti Ageing Face Matte Sunscreen, I can see how this would be such a great product for those with oily skin. It's evident in the blotting paper challenge below!
  • When I think "matte" I think a lack of moisture and unsuitable for dry skin. However, this product is matte in the sense that it is non-greasy, the texture is easily spreadable and provides great moisturisation for those with dry skin.
  • Very minimal scent and does not smell like sunscreen. I remember being able to smell the sunscreen from my friends' faces back in high school and primary school. This is a new era!
  • As claimed, a beautiful sheer tint with an invisible finish, do not mistaken this with coverage. This is honestly the best matte sunscreen mum and I have both tried thus far. We love it!

THE BLOTTING PAPER CHALLENGE

In order to show you guys that this product is significantly less oily, I've applied Sunsense Anti Ageing Face Matte (labelled as 'matte') on one hand and a general sunscreen (labelled as 'non-matte') on the other. I used Swissper's blotting paper and the result is pretty obvious.

What's in my Travel Bag? - Carry on Edition

So I'm off for a short one week getaway later next month, I am so excited and cannot wait. Work has been exhausting and I've been counting down the days.

Some of you may know, I travel light.. unless I'm going for a holiday that's longer than 7 or 8 days, I don't bring luggage. I put everything in a back-pack and off I go. This time I'm flying international with my boyfriend and mum - thank goodness, otherwise the 100ml liquid restriction will drive me nuts. Mum is traveling with us for the first time and she is shocked that we won't have luggage.

After a lot of thought, I decided to bring my WorkCover Sunscreen 65ml, mainly because all three of us will be using the sunscreen all over our limbs and I didn't really want to bring a beloved facial sunscreen and waste it on everyone's limbs.

I don't trust the WorkCover Sunscreen on my face so I'm bringing my trusted Sunsense.

As for skincare I'm bringing my Trilogy Age Proof Starter Pack, it is the perfect travel kit, why? Look at the size of that cleanser, I usually finish my cleanser before anything else. I'll also be doubling up the Booster oil as an under eye treatment. While on the topic of Trilogy, 8th of March is International Women's Day, Trilogy is donating $2 to every bottle of hand harvested sunflower oil to the So You Can campagin, raising awareness supporting disadvantaged women in Tanzania and Kenya.

I generally never take a lot of makeup during my travels, it's humid and I'll be walking around in my joggers, sweating. It just seems logical to have the bare minimum on my face.

I am taking my Thin Lizzy 6 in 1, + Compact Foundation and brush AGAIN! The 6in1 is honestly one of the most versatile and travel friendly compact I have in my entire makeup collection. Although I'm not a very big fan of the compact foundation, it is still travel friendly, slim and easy to store.

In case my skin goes crazy, I'm taking my Bloom's Secret Weapon Concealer Kit with me! It's got 2 colour correctors and a highlighter.

I am also taking my Rimmel's Brow This Way compact with me (again), as you may have seen in my previous No Foundation Makeup video, I use the wax for my brows and the powder to contour.

Now a few miscallaneous products...

Unfortunately, there won't be any lipsticks in this travel bag, I just can't see myself wearing it, so why bother bringing it?.. BUT.. I can't go on a holiday without my Sunsense SPF 50+ Lip Balm.

Since I got laser hair removal done in my arm pits, my sweat started to smell... I'll be going to a humid country so deodorant is a must, I'm taking my mini 35ml Nivea Invisible Deodorant.

Last but not least, the yellow product to the right is facial wipes! I purchased this in Japan from a brand called Yojiya (they sell the best blotting paper, facial powder paper, blush paper etc).

Dessata Rose Gold Hair Brush Review + Demo

Dessata brushes are designed to gently untangle uncontrollable manes, the brush itself is similar to Tangle Teezer but with more bristles. They both fall within the same price range, you're probably thinking, why would I opt for this brand? Well, it's all in the rose gold cover!!!! For the same amount of money, I know I would opt for a rose gold brush. I swear Pantone got it wrong, rose gold is the colour of the year. I'm on the band wagon and no one can change my mind!

If you are not a rose gold fan, Dessata have a whole range of colours and funky designs for you to chose from!

ABOUT DESSATA BRUSHES

  • The bristles are made from a special thermoplastic elastomer material allowing flexibility to bend when encountering hair knots, avoiding any pulling activities. However, the bristles are strong enough to be able to detangle hair smoothly.
  • Dessata brushes protects hair cuticles without causing static, reslting in shiny smooth hair.
  • Ergonomic design adapts to the palm of your hand.
  • Works well with fine and brittle hair as well as curly and coarse hair.
  • Comes in a large variety of colours, prints and brights (i.e., bronze, fuschia and rose gold)

  • Suitable for children
  • Made in Spain

Price:
Dessata Original $34.95
Dessata Mini $29.95

MY VERDICT
  • With my hair being short, it is in it's most non-tangling state ever. I did still love brushing my hair with Dessata's brush, with the amount of bristles it felt like a head massage.
  • My day job requires me to look at ergonomics and this brush had all the right curves making it extremely easy to hold. The fact that you are able to apply all your effort into the centre of the brush makes a huge difference when it comes to tangled hair (in this case, hair extensions).
  • Even though my hair was not in a good state to test the full capacity of this brush, I did have my ever tangling Hair Extensions to brush through. I tried two other different brushes (see video demo below - I actually use the two brushes on a regular basis) neither were able to get through the tangles, I stopped 1/4 of the way in as I felt like I was about to rip off all the hair from the hair extension. With all fails, I decided to put Dessata to the test. Dessata's brush got through a good chunk of the hair extension before I had to give it a slight wiggle to get through some tough tangles. It does still tug to some degree, but when compared to my other two brushes, Dessata is 3 x better.
  • My only complaint is that the original brushes does not come with a protective cover. I am a bit of a clean freak and hate dust getting into my brushes, so I do generally gravatate towards brushes with covers.
  • Other than that I had a great experience with the brush, I love the rose gold cover (made from a hard plastic material in case you are wondering), it looks amazing on my dressing table!

VIDEO: DESSATA VS 2x OTHER BRUSHES

I wanted to show you guys how well this brush worked and photos just didn't do the brush justice. here's a short video.
